December Fun!

November 19th 2013

As some of you may or may not know, I’ve got Christmas on the brain.

You see last year, I started off just fine with that Christmas anticipation but  with all the heat (in Miami) the commercialism, the rush and nickel & diming, come Christmas, “that Christmas feeling” had dissipated. The first time ever for me : ( So much so that this Summer, I didn’t even go to the Robert’s Christmas Wonderland in Tampa, as I usually do.  But as of late, I have been on Facebook enjoying all the “I believe in the Magic of Christmas” posts and enjoying all those magical photographs of Christmas around the world.  Even the Counting Down to Christmas (slow down people!) has had my daughter talking about it since October!

This year, thanks to Julie The Crafty Quilter, we have been preparing for Christmas every month with her “Christmas Once a month” posts. (I am behind on my November post) But, I have also joined all these other events to keep me focused, excited and slowing down enough to take in everyday in December.

First is the Holiday Extravaganza going on at RUKristin’s blog the day after Thanksgiving, a new Black Friday Tradition! You can get a sneak peek here, I’ll be featuring a great recycling tutorial for those Holiday Photo Cards. I hope you’ll stop by!

Up next is the December Daily which is Ali Edwards’ great idea.  It’s just enough scrapbooking to keep you sane and remember all the details of the holidays instead of recalling them in a blur! Just 25 days! That is all the memory keeping you have to do. Now that I can manage! I can’t wait to get my stuff in the mail.  She has a great kit to you can buy to make your own December Daily journal, you can check that out here.  But all you really need is a photo album or generic scrapbook with some pretty paper, stickers and maybe some ribbon. As much or as little as you want to make it!

I am also a list maker. It’s the only way to get things out of my head and so guess what? There is a 30 days of lists event going on, read all about it over here. It’s a special December edition that, of course, is going to go right into my December Daily Journal, one a day. These lists can be written anywhere and it takes what? Like 5 minutes of my life? I can’t wait to start!

And lastly, just because this is my first Thimble Blossoms pattern, by Camille Roskelley, I am having a Vintage Holiday Quilt Along!!  Heidi had one of these last year and they turned out great!  I am going to start quilting on December first, 2 blocks a day, and hope to have it done by Christmas Eve or sooner. And I’ll post my progress periodically. No pressure!  I really fell in love with this Vintage Modern Fabric Collection of hers. It’s the most I have ever splurged on fabric (at that time.) I know there is so much going on in December, but I really would love to put this over my sofa to greet Christmas guests as they come into my house. Say you’ll quilt along!

Simply Retro Quilt Along

September 9th 2013
Sweet Life.
That’s the name of this super easy and fun pattern from Camille Roskelley’s book Simply Retro. It’s the next project on the Quilt Along hosted by Jana, hop on over to her blog and see what other people have made. We are almost done with the book!!

I opted out of making a full quilt since I already have done one baby quilt and I am working on another baby quilt and one full sized quilt, both from this book.
So I decided to make a pillow using these Kate Spain Fat Quarters I got this summer.
And I used some “word” fabric full of Christmas cheer, I already had for the back.
Wondering what that flap is for?  It’s a zipper cover.
I used to be a Zippophobe (to use the word from The Patchsmith, Amanda.) It means “someone who has fear or anxiety at the thought of inserting, installing, attaching or assembling a zipper into any type of sewing project.”
So yep! I finally faced my fear and did a zipper, I used Amy’s tutorial  from her blog Amy Made that! It was really a cinch! I think I am going to buy zippers in bulk now! : )
And as an added bonus for me, this project also serves as my Christmas Once a Month Project hosted by Julie the Crafty Quilter. YAY!!

So I have two great Christmas pillows ready for December.
It’s time to start cranking out more Christmas Crafts.

Christmas Once a Month:

August 12th 2013
As Summer comes to a close, for those of us that are school minded that is, I wanted to give it a proper farewell.

Unfortunately, it seems as if Summer and I have hardly had a chance to sit and relax, this year. It’s been so hectic with sports schedules, caring for the sick and keeping a house when people are here most of the time.  There is just much more to do and the pool suffering from a bad case of algae, we haven’t stepped foot in it either.
Nevertheless, I thought I should make something to remind me of Summer when Winter Recess comes around.  So, I made these Beach themed Christmas ornaments for the Christmas Once a Month hosted by Julie. (I’m posting a few days early, shhhhh)

I am just going to showcase them in pictures.
Pictures updated on September 6, 2013 with bling!!

 I really love the bling!!
They are about 4 – 6 inches in size.

Next week, I am going to do a complete tutorial on the crab. Sewing version and gluing version a child can do, with a little guidance. Do come back and take a look won’t you?

Coming up, Christmas in July!

Christmas Once a Month Project #6

June 15th 2013
I just want to formally thank Julie from the crafty quilter for this great idea of Christmas Once a Month projects.  Just add the tag below if you want to join in!

Christmas Once a Month at The Crafty Quilter

I have collected several Mary Engelbreit Christmas Craft books and while all my favorite projects have been marked for years, it’s only now that I feel “obligated” (in the best sense of the word) to get them done! This month’s project is from this book below.

A black and White checked Scottie, the best part is the back which is red corduroy.

I can’t tell you how long it took me to finally find red corduroy in a fabric store in sunny South Florida. Finally, when Wal-mart had the fabric close out, I found what I was looking for. But that was years ago! That’s how long I’ve been waiting to do this.

The book had a dog template on a grid. I just cut some tracing paper about 16 by 16 and drew it out free hand. It’s easier than enlarging on a copy machine or printer. Not bad, eh?

The directions said to lay out the checked on the bias (diagonal) that would explain the slight stretching I encountered.

I left out the piping because it was really just too much trouble since what I had was too small.

Although they recommended attaching the ribbon after the pillow was sewn, I knew better than that. Not only did I add ribbon for each side, I pinned it between the layers and sewed them right between the seams.  There was no bulk or untidiness.

Gold jingle bells on the “dressy” side and a
“Santa Hat” brad on the “fun”side.

Someone over here already asked for this puppy, maybe Christmas will come early!
