Friday Night Block Party: Heart Block

February 14th 2014

Happy Valentines Day and welcome to the

pinwheel block party

For those of you that are new here, we are following along the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt and getting acquainted with the blocks in that book, one at a time.

But  in today’s party we are featuring the HEART block – and I don’t mean a heart attack, I mean that this block is not in the book I mentioned before. So let’s make this special block to celebrate the day of love!  There have been so many beautiful “hearty” things all over blog land  I’m sure you have seen lots of them. Here are just a few that follow this block pattern or a slight variation of it.

This one is from Chicagonow.com

And this one from Amy Smart complete with tutorial!

But this was my favorite over at Sew Mama Sew.

Craftsy has even made a collection of patterns all about hearts! Check it out here!

I wanted to do just a quick tutorial on how it’s done! This one measures 8 1/2 inches unfinished.

Using 2 1/2 inch units of squares and half square triangles.

Line up your units like this.

Then sew them horizontally and press seams in opposite directions for each row.

Then sew the rows together. There is a finished heart block.

That was easy!

Love Letter Cushion

February 5th 2014

Another day of Valentine tutorials! Thanks so much for stopping by.

Today’s tutorial is a Love Letter Cushion.

For this cushion you will need some linen 2 rectangles 8″ x 20″ and enough Jumbo Rick Rack to go around, 60 inches, some decorative beads (optional), printable fabric and a 2″ x 2″ scrap for stamp.

First print out your return and address labels with whatever message and color you like. **Color was drained when printed, just sayin’.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Iron on the selected labels to your “envelope” I marked the envelope with invisible ink so they would not catch in the 1/2 inch seam.

Using a spray baste, I added some batting smoothing it over with the ruler or straight edge to avoid bubbles.

I even used scrap batting.

I did a blanket stitch around each label

and linked heart patterns all over the envelope.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

If it needs a little “bling” like mine did, go ahead and add some, I  added mine after turning it.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

With right sides together, measure and pin the Rick Rack, remember we are using a 1/2 inch seam.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Pin in place all the way around and leave an opening for stuffing.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

When I got to the corners, I cut the Rick Rack  and started with a new piece for neater corners.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Before turning, cut off the ends to avoid bulk in the corners.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Stuff generously with Poly-fil. Closing pillow stitches tell it all! I like to pin the opening closed and stitch that way for more consistent stitches. Use a blending color thread.

So there is your Love Letter cushion. Another option instead of labels would be to use embroidery! I may try that next year.  The font I used is called Fiolex Girls, complete with hearts!

Now share them with those you love the most!
