Friday Night Block Party: Granny Squares

September 20th 2013
Welcome to another Block Party. Thanks for coming back every week that’s so nice of you!!
I almost forgot about the party this week because I was working on a Fall Blog Hop that started yesterday over at Sunshine in the Attic.
This week’s block is familiar. I had started this quilt way back but I am so happy to finally have all the blocks done!
I thought this was a nice “manly” block to make for our Pastor but it turns out it’s called a “Granny Square.” (But we won’t tell him that!)
This is very popular in the “crochet” and “knitting” world look here for a little history
here are some samples

I don’t see the resemblance.
And look what Sayraphim Lothiam says
” a reproduction of a number of crochet newsletters stuffed full of patterns from a company called Weldons from the mid 1800s. Right at the back, there’s a pattern for “Patchwork Squares”, which has a little blurb at the top describing how useful these are for using up scraps of yarn you might have, and how they’re great for rugs, baby’s blankets and the like. Breathless I turned the page to see if I could find an illustration and there, on the next page, was a handsome black and white engraving of… a granny square!”
In quilting it has many different renditions, ah, the magic of quilting, a change in color or placement just makes all the difference!  Look at these examples from the Simply Retro Flickr Group

Take a look at how mine turned out. The color theme is Earth.

Here the grannies are sitting waiting to finish the project (this is my biggest quilt yet, I need backing and batting!)
So there you have all my granny squares. Please add you link below of whatever block has you busy these days. This month’s giveaway is a charm pack from the Fat Quarter Shop.  And Thanks to our giveaway sponsors!

There is really a classic feel to this next project on the Simply Retro Quilt Along. You know the one Jana is hosting?

I am going to do this one the same size as the book suggests, this will be my first large quilt. Of course, I already know who is going to get it. According to Hallmark, October is Clergy Appreciation Month, so if I can pull it off, maybe my Pastor will be getting this quilt in a couple of months.  He likes “earth” colors so this is the palette I have chosen. It’s not by coincidence I have all these already in my fabric stash!
The trick was preserving the corners of the blocks!
This is what I’ve done so far
Come back for an update next week, when I piece it all together. Even I can’t wait!!
